What is a mobile ‘app’?

A mobile application or app is a software program that runs on a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone. Mobile apps range in size and complexity from a simple calculator application to an involved math program to plot function curves and equations to an app that helps you learn French to the latest popular game.

Apps are often specific to a mobile device and can be downloaded from the app store for your mobile device. For example, the Android phone has the Android Market, the iPhone has the Apple App Store and BlackBerries have the BlackBerry World. These app stores serve as a hub to search for, purchase and download apps. Some apps are free while others have an initial cost or in-app use costs.

The following sections will provide you a list of apps intended to improve the accessibility of your Smartphone. Before you commit to an app consider the types of features you might need on your smartphone or tablet for it to work, usually the app purchase page will list hardware requirements like system versions.
