What’s a mobile ‘app’?

A mobile application or app is a software program that runs on the mobile device. These programs range in size and complexity from a simple calculator application to an involved math program to plot function curves, equations, etc. to an app that helps you to learn French.

Apps are often specific to a mobile device. They can be downloaded from the app store for your mobile device; for example, the Android phone has the Android Market, the iPhone has the Apple App Store and BlackBerries have the BlackBerry App World. These app stores serve as a hub where you can search for, purchase and download the apps. Prices also vary widely beginning with free and going up from there.

The following sections will provide you a list of apps that help improve the accessibility of your Smartphone. Please note that it is important to test out the app and the Smartphone before making a commitment to purchasing them.
